Become a (Pop/Rock) Star in Japan!

Sony Music Japan International Audition

It does sound like an April’s fool but it is just an odd starting date for a real event: for the first time ever, Sony Music Entertainment Japan is hosting an “International Audition”. What it means is that the Japanese branch of Sony Music is looking for foreigners to spice up their catalog. Not just models, they are actually open to all kinds of talents, from musicians, to bands, to TV talents. It seems everyone is invited to apply and try their chance to become a star.”Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” meets Show Business! It isn’t rare for Japanese entertainment companies and music labels to host big public auditions like that, and many successful artists have been found through these. Not only interpreters, but also composers, writers, and all-round music artists. What makes this audition different however is that this time, Sony Music is targetting gaijin! And not just fluent Japanese-speakers either: English speakers, Chinese, Koreans, the scope is large and the possibilities seem infinite. Participants from any nationality, sex and age are welcome.

Because of its size, Sony Music is interested in all kinds of profiles, and any musical genres. And the best part is that you can enter from anywhere, inside or outside from Japan.

If you don’t have any recordings, you can apply without sending a demo. You can also submit your homepage’s URL if it has your music and profile online. In fact, you can even enter if you don’t have any musical experience (“we welcome applications from anyone wishing to become a musical artist”). Cover songs are ok too, and to make sure every singer has a chance to get noticed, they even accept submission of demos recorded at a karaoke…

Models are welcome too (“we have some model management groups within Sony so models are also welcome”), but fear not: someone with a better look will not be given priority (“it is important for those who want to become a model or TV talent to have charisma and a unique look. However, for musical artists, the look won’t affect our decision”).

Also notable are the facts that the audition is free (“no fees required for application, screening, or any matters thereafter”), and if you get chosen, you don’t have to worry about money either (“Sony Music will bear all the costs involved in developing you career. If you need lessons, for example, Sony Music will take care of all the lesson fees.”).

Regarding copyright issues, Sony Music will not re-use your original content afterwards (“application materials will not be used for any purposes other than screening”). You will also keep the rights of your songs (“If Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc wants to release one of your songs, we will discuss and make a contract with you before releasing it”).

The audition starts today and end on May 31st, 2005.

More details on the requirements, address etc. on the official Sony Music Japan website

Cornelius

Cornelius (born Keigo Oyamada (小山田圭吾) Jan 27, 1969 in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese recording artist and producer. Oyamada’s first claim to fame was as a member of the pop duo, Flipper’s Guitar, one of the key groups of the Tokyo Shibuya-kei scene. Following the disbandment of Flipper’s Guitar in 1991, Oyamada donned the "Cornelius" moniker and embarked on a successful solo career.

Cornelius’s musical style is often described as being similar to Beck’s, whom he acknowledges influenced him along with The Beatles , The Beach Boys. The Jesus and Mary Chain and Primal Scream among others.

He chose his pseudonym in tribute to the character of the same name from the movie Planet of the Apes. He commissioned a song, about himself, on Momus’ 1999 album Stars Forever (although he later described the song as "embarrassing").

Oyamada married fellow musician and collaborator Takako Minekawa in 2000.

Gackt

Gackt M.S. Camui (ガクト, but most often written in English, even in Japan, pronounced “ga-ku-to”) is a song writer, vocalist, and multi-talented instrumentalist — (trumpet, tuba, horn, trombone, piano, guitar, drums, bass), all other standard orchestral instruments, and most traditional Japanese instruments — as well as a beloved celebrity amongst females, both in Japan and the international JPop fan community. Gackt claims to be a Norwegian vampire. He was also vocalist of Cains:Feel and Malice Mizer. Thanks to him, Malice Mizer became well-known.

Gackt can speak Japanese, English, French, Mandarin, and Korean.

Life

Early life

Camui does not release his birth date, maintaining a biography fit for a member of Malice Mizer. His given birthdate is July 4, 1540, but some sources say that he was born July 4, 1973. He has never revealed his real name, and various rumors about what it might be (Okabe Satoru?) are pure conjecture.

Born in Okinawa, Japan, he was raised by unusually strict parents who regulated his life. His television viewing was restricted to national or educational programming. At age seven, Gackt nearly drowned in the Sea of Okinawa. After being saved, he claimed to be able to see things that normal people couldn’t and was then sent into isolation in a mental hospital.

Gackt was a very competitive person, saying, "It’s not that I want to win, it’s just that I don’t want to lose." As a child, he had always wanted to be better than anyone else and continues to learn new skills and practice existing skills to become better. He was also very ambitious as well he is now.

His interest in music was a rough one; his parents, both musicians, forced him to learn the piano when he was three. He was too small to actually play, but he had to sit in front of the piano for two hours. Later, his competitive nature made him master the piano after seeing his friend play better than him. Then, Gackt’s interest changed to brass instruments after seeing his father play trumpet. Again, his competitive nature resulted in non-stop practice and mastery of several instruments of the brass category, but it all ended when his parents worried it would damage his teeth and forbade him to play. This prompted him to consider becoming a music conductor.

When Gackt turned 17, his music life changed when his mother told him that she regretted forcing him to learn piano. Then he changed his tastes in music from classical to rock (after becoming very interested in it because he had never heard it in his childhood) and moved him to learn band instruments.

Early Career

Gackt started as a drum technician for a recording studio and drummer for an unknown band. Later on, he met lifelong friends and fellow performers Ren and You and formed a band, Cains:Feel, with Gackt as the vocalist, although he felt his deep voice wasn’t suited for the trend at the time.

Days with Malice Mizer

Gackt’s popularity began to rise after joining the visual kei band Malice Mizer on October 1995 as their new vocalist. His contributions to the band led it in a new stylistic direction, bringing a soft romantic touch to their music as well as their appearance. During Gackt’s time with the band Malice Mizer met its greatest popularity, releasing two albums (Voyage ~sans retour~ on Mana’s Midi:Nette label and their first and only major release, Merveilles on Nippon Columbia) as well as a number of singles.

Gackt left in 1998 after the end of the "Merveilles" Tour. He has variously cited personal, artistic, and financial differences as reasons for leaving. Also, in his autobiography, Gackt said that he was asked by Malice Mizer to leave, although he wished to stay.

Solo career

After leaving Malice Mizer, Gackt started a solo career with a group of people called GacktJOB, consisting of several members including You (violin / rhythm guitar), Yukihiro Chachamaru Fujimura (lead guitar/effects), Masa (rhythm guitar), Ren (bass), Toshi (drums), Yosh (choreographer/dancer), and Igao (keyboards) (and much later Ryuichi Ryu Nishida on drums, and Ju-ken on bass). His live shows often include homoerotic play with these members. His solo career has been a great success as he continues to maintain a level of popularity far greater than when he was still with Malice Mizer. His fans (whom he calls "dears") span several countries.

In addition to music, Gackt has been involved as an actor in various TV commercials, the Japanese drama Hero’s Hero, and co-writing and co-starring in the movie Moon Child with Hyde, vocalist of L’Arc~en~Ciel.

He has also written a book, Moonchild: Requiem, and several as-yet unpublished short stories, worked as a runway model for his favorite designer, Yoshiyuki Konishi, designed his own stage-wear and clothing line, and opened his own private, members only restaurant/bar, Tamaly Bar, complete with his own personal and family recipies.

Gackt was also involved in the PlayStation 2 game Bujingai, where he performed voice work as well as doing motion capture for the game’s protagonist. Other voice-over work Gackt has done includes the character ‘Seiji’ from the anime New Fist of the North Star (Shin Hokuto no Ken). He also performed the ending theme (Tsuki no Uta) for the anime Texhnolyze.

L’Arc-en-Ciel

L’Arc~en~Ciel (ラルク アン シエル), also known as Laruku (ラルク) or L’Arc to their fans, is a popular Japanese rock band consisting of four members. The name means “Arc in the Sky”, or “rainbow” in French.

Biography

Early days

In February of 1991, Tetsu and Hyde, along with Hiro (guitar) and Pero (drums) formed the band named after a movie that Tetsu had seen. After a year of gaining notoriety in their hometown of Osaka, Hiro left the band on June 12, 1992. Pero soon followed on December 30 of that same year, supposedly to join up with his buddy hiro again. Tetsu convinced his friend Ken to quit his studies in architectural design and join the band. A new drummer, Sakura, was recruited after Tetsu saw him play. In 1993, the band released their debut album, DUNE under the indies label Danger Crue, which was met with plenty of success, managing to be #1 on the Oricon indies charts.

Sakura Days

This caught the attention of some major labels, so in 1994, they signed for Sony’s Ki/oon division, releasing their 2nd album, Tierra, that same year. heavenly followed in 1995 and True, their first million seller, in 1996.

Yukihiro days

In 1997, sakura was arrested for heroin possession and quit the band. Their popularity was growing too rapidly to quit, so a new tour was organized and yukihiro joined the band. The first concert date of the new tour in Tokyo Dome had an attendance of 56,000 and sold out in four minutes, a testament to their popularity. Their next album was HEART, in 1998.

L’Arc~en~Ciel released three more albums of new material during the next few years: ark and ray which were released simultaneously in 1999, followed by REAL in 2000, which, for the longest time, was the last CD of new material, although many more compilation and remix albums would follow. L’Arc~en~Ciel also composed several theme songs for various anime series, including DNA², Rurouni Kenshin, Great Teacher Onizuka and Fullmetal Alchemist. They also created the ending theme song to the movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

After a while, however, the various members began working on various solo projects. Hyde released several solo albums, ken founded SONS OF ALL PUSSYS, tetsu started TETSU69 and yukihiro played with Acid Android. The band seemed close to calling it quits.

Post-Hiatus days

In June 2003, Laruku came back to play a series of seven concerts in Tokyo called the "Shibuya Seven Days" and announced a new album for release in the following year. So, in February 2004, their first single in more than three years came out, followed by another one in early March. Finally, their long-awaited new album, SMILE, was released on March 31.

Shortly after, on June 2, 2004, the single 自由への招待 (Jiyuu e no Shoutai) introduced "P’UNK~EN~CIEL", a part change, for the first time on CD with "milky way". In the past, the band also played a P’UNK version of "Round and Round" live.

On July 31, 2004, L’Arc~en~Ciel made their first U.S. concert debut at Otakon 2004. Approximately 12,000 Otakon attendees attended the concert which was held at a outside venue for the first time in Otakon’s musical guests history, the 1st Mariner Arena located near the Baltimore Convention Center.

In October 2004, it was revealed by Sony Music Japan that they will release a DVD of the Otakon 2004 concert on December 8, 2004 in Japan for 4,515 yen, approximately $40 USD. Tofu Records, who handles L’Arc’s U.S. releases, was scheduled to release of the DVD in America on January 25, 2005, but it has been postponed indefinitely. At the concert, Sony Music Japan had people filming the concert but Otakon believed it was for archival purposes.

The single ‘Killing Me’ was released with another P’UNK track on January 13, 2005.

Looking ahead, the band will do the opening and ending themes for the Fullmetal Alchemist movie. Whether or not the song(s) will be a single is currently open to speculation. In addition, "L’Arc~en~Ciel TOUR 2005" has been announced but information pending.

When BoA was 11 years old, BoA’s brother entered a talent contest to find a new multicultural star hosted by the Korean corporation SM Entertainment. The company invited their participants to bring younger siblings, and BoA’s brother brought her along. Before long, SM had settled on her as their future star. After persuading her parents that their young girl should become a singer instead of continuing to study (BoA was a very bright student nevertheless), SM began her training and she was learning the languages a cross-cultural Asian icon would need.

In 2002, her album Listen to my Heart rocketed straight to #1 on the Japanese Oricon charts, during the time of the tension surrounding the 2002 World Cup, which was hosted by Korea and Japan.

BoA was awarded “Most Influencial Asian Artist” and ” Favorite Artist Korea” Prizes at MTV Asia Awards held in Singapore on February, 2004. Her songs are now popular even in Taiwan, PRC and some Southeast Asian countries. She is going to move her main theater from Japan to China.

She appears on numerous magazine covers and some commercials, including KOSE, MISSHA, Lipton, Ting, Pantech & Curitel, Elite, Lotte, Maybelline, and Wired XYZ.

BoA also appeared in the Korean Music Festival held in the Sydney Opera House on the 21st of June 2004.

Koda Kumi

Koda Kumi (倖田來未) (born November 13, 1982), is a Japanese solo rhythm and blues singer. She was born and raised in Kyoto, Japan. She debuted in the professional singing career on December 6, 2000.

Kumi’s first single track is “Take Back”, which was released in the United States in March 2001. Her follow-up single is “Trust Your Love”, which held the 39th position in Billboard’s Hot 100 singles sales chart and the first position in Billboard’s Hot Dance Music and Maxi-Singles chart. Her first album was Affection, produced by Max Matsuura. It contains remixes by Hex Hector and Jonathan Peters. She also performed the Japanese version of 1000 Words, a song from the video game, Final Fantasy X-2. She is also the voice actress for Lenne in the Japanese version of that video game.

To honor the victims of the September 11 terrorist attack, Kumi collaborated with Korean singer Kwon BoA on the charity album The Meaning of Peace, produced by Tetsuya Komuro, one of the most prolific, famous, and successsful music producers in Japan.

She is been widely known for her effort to gain popularity as the singer for the Japanese version of Final Fantasy X-2, singing “1000 no Kotoba” (1000 Words) and the opening song “real Emotion.” Although she recorded English versions of both songs, Square Enix believed that it sounded low-quality or lackluster, and many English-speaking fans have commented on the versions’ Engrish lyrics and pronunciation. Consequently, Square Enix wisely* opted to have Jade of Sweetbox to perform the English versions of the Final Fantasy X-2 vocal songs. However, Kumi’s versions were later released as b-sides on her single, “Come With Me”.

Kumi is also a spokeswoman for Christian Dior in Japan. Her favorite artists are Christina Aguilera and Ja Rule.

Her first concert in the United States took place at the Marriot at the Capital in Austin, Texas, on January 30, 2004 as a part of the Ushicon 3 anime convention.

Many gamers found Jade’s own version of “Real Emotion” horrible. Jade’s english is definitely better. But Koda Kumi’s voice has been a much better choice for the introduction sequence. Koda Kumi’s english isn’t as bad as some people are saying.

Do As Infinity

Do As Infinity (Japanese: ドゥー・アズ・インフィニティ or Chinese: 大無限樂團) is a popular Japanese band who released their first single, “Tangerine Dream”, on September 29, 1999. Their name is sometimes abbreviated as D.A.I., and is named for the band’s guitarist Dai Nagao.

Members

Main members:

  • Tomiko Van (lyrics, vocals)
  • Ryo Owatari (guitar, backup vocals)
  • Dai Nagao (composition, guitar)

Other members:

  • Naoki Hayashibe (guitar)
  • Jun Matsumoto (drums)
  • Hamano Kazko (chorus)
  • Michitaro (bass)
  • Takase Jun (keyboard)

History (compiled and edited from various sources)

Before there was Do As Infinity, there was only Nagao Dai. In his early days as a musician, Dai was a composer for an amateur band. One thing leads to another, and that band disbanded. Keeping his dream alive, Dai kept on composing songs and he sent them to more than 50 record companies in Japan.

Everything changed when Dai found AVEX, who hired him as a composer. He was immediately given a task to compose songs for Ayumi Hamasaki and Hitomi. But he never forgot his one dream: to have his own band.

AVEX gave him a chance to make his dream come true. Auditions were held, and he chose Van Tomiko as lead singer, and Ryo Owatari as guitarist. On September 29th, 1999, the trio released their first single Tangerine Dream, and held a live concert at the Shibuya.they held performances almost daily at a number of locations, ranging from Shibuya’s Hachiko (the most famous place in all of Japan for street performers), to Yokohama Station, even traveling to Fukuoka and other cities.

Their performances were well received. DAI’s infectious sound might have sounded vaguely familiar to passers-by, and with good reason. Composer and founder of the group (as well as the inspiration for the intriguing band name) Nagao Dai had already written many songs for several artists, most notably divas hitomi and Hamasaki Ayumi. However, there’s no question that the songs he writes for Do As Infinity have their own unique flavor. This is due to the contributions of the other core members of the band, guitarist Owatari Ryo and vocalist Van (Van-chan) Tomiko. Ryo gives the band its swagger. With a little bit of funk and a whole lot of rock, he makes Nagao’s melodies come to life. Van-chan gives the melodies a voice. She sings with a combination of power and emotion, captivating the audience.

Van-chan, Ryo, and Nagao would have plenty of audiences to captivate. The remainder of 1999 was spent performing both on the street and at in-store concerts at CD stores across the country. They also took part in choice events nationwide, including a festival in Van-chan’s native Kumamoto prefecture. Their legendary streak of street concerts ended at one hundred, with a free concert for their fans, held at Shibuya Kokaido. The December release of their second single, Heart, didn’t slow them down one bit. They continued to do public appearances all the way up to the year-end avex MILENNIUM COUNT DOWN 1999-2000 held on New Year’s Eve in Roppongi’s Velfarre club.

The band began the new year in the same way they ended the last ミ by performing. They continued to appear on radio shows and at CD store events, turning more and more fans on to the sound of Do As Infinity. Their third single, Oasis, was released at the end of January and was chosen as the official TV commercial song for Kanebo Cosmetics’ Testimo line of products. Do As Infinity was slowly making its way into the limelight, but it was their next single that would give them the recognition they deserved.

Yesterday & Today was chosen as the theme song for ‘Nisennen no Koi’, A touching ballad in and of itself, its sales were boosted thanks to its exposure in the popular drama. Starring perennial fan favorite Nakayama Miho and new heart-throb Kaneshiro Takeshi (Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake), and given the elite timeslot of ‘Getsu Kyuu’ (Mondays at 9pm, the timeslot for some of the most successful dramas ever), almost everyone in the country was tuning in to Do As Infinity. The B-side of the single, Raven, was also being used as the ending song to the movie Uzumaki, giving the band even more exposure.

The band’s hard work paid off. Their first album, Break of Dawn, was released that March, only a month after Yesterday & Today, debuting at an amazing number three on the Oricon rankings chart. Do As Infinity had officially arrived, but they had no intentions of stopping there. As always, they continued to make public appearances and do numerous live performances all over Japan. The band released their fifth single in August of that year, another maxi-single with two hit songs ミ the fan favorite, rumble fish, was used as the theme song for the hit movie Kamen Gakuen. Meanwhile, the accompanying song, Summer Days, was used as a theme song for Fuji TV’s OL polis, and would become a staple song at all DAI live concerts. At the end of November the band would release We are. — a song with a Christmas theme, thus ensuring its annual replay for years to come. DAI would end the year and the century with another countdown live held at the Velfarre club in Roppongi.

2001 was a whirlwind year for the band. With an album and six singles under their belts, the trio was well on their way to becoming seasoned veterans in the business, but they still had not appeared on national television. That changed with the release of their first single in the new millennium, Desire. The single was performed on the hit TV show Music Station, but with a catch. For some reason, Van-chan represented the band by herself, but nevertheless the song and the band got national exposure. The televised performance brought Do As Infinity to an even wider audience, and helped to make their new album, New World, debut at an amazing number one on the Oricon album ranking charts.

With Desire’s release in January, and New World in February, the band deserved a break. But they would think nothing of it. The following month they would release their first promotional video collection on DVD, simply entitled 9, and would go on tour throughout the month of May. They closed out the month of May with the release of their ninth single, Week! The following month would see the release of Fukai Mori, which was chosen as the theme song for the hit anime series Inuyasha. The song was a huge hit, and would soon become the band’s signature song. The remainder of the year was spent in preparation for yet another live concert tour, which would begin in November, not long after the release of their 11th single, Boukenshatachi, and their third album, Deep Forest — which inevitably debuted at number one on the charts.

The new year started with Van-chan appearing on the avex charity album VARIOUS ARTISTS FEATURING songnation, and the release of the band’s 12th hit single, Hi no Ataru Sakamichi, the following month. Then the band went global. After releasing a best album, Do the Best, in March, the band traveled to Taiwan and Hong Kong in April for a special campaign. Their following overseas was almost as huge as in their own country, drawing an amazing 500 fans to their in-store event held at the HMV CD store in Hong Kong. The band took a short break upon returning to Japan, but released their 13th single in July, the double A-sided under the sun/under the moon. In August the band participated in avex’s a-nation tour, performing in eight venues all over Japan.

Do As Infinity’s 14th single, Shinjitsu no Uta, was released in October, and sparked the beginning of a new project for the band. Despite their success, they wanted to show their fans that they had not forgotten them. They advertised on their website for fans to send them short stories using the band’s previous releases as themes and using the word shinjitsu (truth) somewhere in the story. Entitled Your Truth, these stories are now available in book form. The band closed out the year with another live tour, understatedly titled Do As Infinity greatest year 02 ~ALL STANDING~, and the year-end release of their fourth album, True Song.

The band has come a long way since their days of performing in front of commuters on the street. At the time of this writing, the band is in the midst of yet another live concert tour, showcasing their soon-to-be-released 15th single, Mahou no Kotoba ~Would You Marry Me?~. Do As Infinity has achieved superstar status in the four years since their debut, and will no doubt continue to be successful in the years to come.

Along with video collections and recorded live concerts, Do As Infinity is still going strong. Although Nagao Dai isn’t as active as he was in the beginning (he doesn’t participate in promotional events anymore, such as video clips or photo shoots) he is still the main composer and the brain behind the band. He does, though, appear in concerts from time to time.

Judy and Mary

Judy and Mary are a Japanese pop band known for their noisy but melodic music in the 90’s. They formed in 1991 when bassist Onda Yoshihito (恩田快人) met vocalist Isoya Yuki (磯谷有希) in Hakodate, Hokkaido. Later drummer Igarashi Kohta (五十嵐公太) and guitarist Asanuma Takuya (浅沼拓也) were added to round out the group.

In 1992 they released their first album Be Ambitious with an accompanying video on an independent label. They were picked up by Sony Records and released their first major label single, Power of Love in 1993. Their first major label album, J.A.M, was released in 1994. With each released they grew in popularity until they became one of the most popular and well-known bands in Japan.

In all they released 6 albums, 2 best of albums and a slew of singles to match. Judy and Mary broke up in 2001.
