Weird Band Names
The Lonely Planet guide to Japan recommends in the entertainment section to go out and see some bands based on how silly their names sound. While I never got around to trying that myself, I did start collecting silly band names. Here are some of them:
- Ogre You Asshole - a pop/rock outfit from Nagoya
- Bump of Chicken - rock band from….somewhere
- Analog Fish - an indie group based in Tokyo
- ashphalt frustration - more indie musicians, this time from Chiba
- Chatmonchy - all girl indie group
- Thee Michelle Gun Elephant - now defunct rock band from Chiba
- Yum! Yum! Orange - “Girl pop meets ska”
- Missile Innovation - rock band with former Do As Infinity’s frontman
- Intestine Baalism - thrash and death metal band
There’s oh-so-many more bands I could list here, but I thought I would let you, dear readers, comment with more. Seriously, they must just go through an English dictionary and find some words they like the sound of to get their band names! Anyway, what strange Japanese band names have you heard?

Puppet Mammy was definitely one of my favorite obscure names…

I’m a prety big fan of J-band John Holmez (heh), who not only put on a great show, they’re a great bunch of guys. They’ve been inactive for a while now, though.

The funniest band name I ever saw when I was in Japan was “Seagull screaming ‘Kiss Her, Kiss her’”. No joke. xx

Well, there was the English indie band “Gaye Bikers on Acid” in the 80s, so calling your band Ogre You Asshole doesn’t sound particularly outrageous to me.

Looking through a karaoke book in a hostess bar I came across
“Hide with Spread Beaver”
which struck as a rather good idea considering my location.

My Canadian colleague did a double-take when we came across “Hide the Spread Beaver” in the karaoke songbook. We were assured that this band was indeed for real.
